Annual Fundraiser Walk in Labrador Park

On Sunday 16th June 2013, First Hand held our annual fundraiser walk.  We raised money for the ‘Village Health and Community Development’ project in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh in Cambodia. There were fun challenges for the kids and grown-ups, a sausage sizzle and it was a fantastic day at Labrador Park.  $4,000 was raised for this terrific...
First Hand Trip to Phnom Penh May 2013

First Hand Trip to Phnom Penh May 2013

It was with much excitement the first 3 First Hand families set off for Phnom Penh on Labour Day, taking our huge bags of donations that had been collected in the run up to the trip. Wednesday afternoon saw us visiting the sisters at the Missionaries of Charity in central Phnom Penh. On the way we stopped at the rice market and supermarket to stock up on supplies – baby milk powder, nappies, floor cleaner, crackers. We then spent about an hour in the small room full of cots playing with the toddlers and babies that live there. We helped the younger ones with their dinner of chicken and rice (seconds were available for the hungry ones!) – all the children were in clean clothes with bottles of milk and ready for bed when we left. Thursday was the Riverkids day. We went down to the centre in the slum area of Phnom Penh and worked with about 30 children aged around 5-8 years old. While Qamariah and Nori, the two artists who accompanied us on the trip, got to work on the wall mural, the children themselves did some painting and then some tie dying on plain white t-shirts. The results were very colourful and the children were pleased to take them home at lunchtime along with beaded necklaces we had made with them and of course their painted faces. We visited the slum areas on the banks of the Mekong where many of the families live who are supported by RiverKids. The houses are really unstable, small and the area is frequently flooded during the rainy season....

First Hand 80’s Disco!

Friday 27th May 2011 Friday May 27th 2011? I don’t think so! For those crazy chickens heading to the First Hand ‘Back to the 80s Party’, the year was more like 1981… More than 120 guests, all dressed to impress (80s style), turned up to the Dutch Club with the clear intention of bopping the night away to the very best of 80s pop, rock and disco. Partygoers enjoyed free-flow drinks and a curry buffet and were able to help donate to First Hand either by bidding for some impressive auction items or buying tickets to win some great prizes. But the serious business was going down on the dance-floor. Strutting their stuff, smoke-machine billowing in the background, celebrity spotters could be forgiven for picking out Michael Jackson, Madonna, Axel Rose, Holly Johnson and many more icons of the era. In all, the night was a great success with a fantastic amount raised $16,287.60, which will go to the RiverKids project food programme. With some great photos of the occasion people sure did Relax, enjoy some Red Red Wine and D.I S.C.O.! Disco...

First Hand Kids Team visits Phnom Penh

March 23 2011 First Hand had a fantastic trip to Cambodia at the end of March. Over the 3-day period the team visited 4 of the centres that we support there. The Riverkids, Neak Leong, The Missionaires of Charity and the Handicapped Centre. We took an incredible 400 kilos of donations with us to Phnom Penh. We went in a group of 14 people – 5 Adults and 9 children. The aim was for the Singapore Children to share some of their knowledge by holding Art/Craft workshops for the under privileged children in Phnom Penh. Before going all the children who were participating on the visit raised money to buy the art supplies, together with their class friends at their various schools. They also had to attend a workshop to practice the skills needed to run their own workshops in Phnom Penh. Many thanks to with Patricia Dinglestead at CIS for helping with this. The Art workshops went down incredibly well and all the children really enjoyed the painting and clay activities. We were all amazed how artistic the children were, and how much they appreciated the workshop. It was a perfect way for the Kids Team to get to know the children in the centers and be able to share something with them. We would definitely like to repeat these sessions with them. With the money raised by all 9 of the children from Singapore we were able to buy all the necessary art supplies for the trip and also to leave some behind so that they could repeat the activities. We also had money left over to provide...

First Hand update on help provided to desperate family

Wednesday, December 8, 2010 Soriya and Sovanny are a mother and daughter living within one of the communities close to the Riverkids project in Phnom Penh. Soriya has worked as a sex worker on the streets for a long time, she is in her late thirties and her daughter is turning 14. Soriya is HIV+ and has 3 children, son aged 20, daughter 13 and son 5. Only the middle daughter Sovanny is living with her the others are with the father. We met her whilst visiting the slum communities, when she came into the Riverkids Alexandra centre with her daughter. She had been pushed off a motorbike in the night by a client who didn’t want to pay his bill. She had really nasty wounds over her knees and legs and looked incredibly frail. At the time there was not much we could do for her so we left her in the care of the housemothers at Riverkids, but invited her to come for lunch with us when we took the children out after the morning tour. Our guide Soklee suggested that we could interview her after lunch so that we could pay her for the interview and therefore give her some money. So we continued our visit and then met up with the Riverkids, Housemothers and Soriya and Sovanny and took them all for lunch and ice cream. After lunch we talked to her and found out her desperate story. Soriya had been locked out of her house for not paying her rent. (Later we found out that she had actually been locked out for 3 nights...
