The First Hand volunteer team has just returned from an unforgettable trip to Cambodia, where we spent time with our two incredible partner organisations. The first day was spent with Mother’s Heart at their Phnom Penh office, where we witnessed firsthand the compassion and courage that drives their life-changing work with women and girls facing crisis pregnancies. What we heard and saw moved us deeply.
In the morning, we learnt about the impact and achievements of Mother’s Heart. It has now transformed 2172 lives reaching far beyond the mother and child. It extends into families and communities, nurturing healing and a brighter future for all.
In the afternoon, we met some of the remarkable women and girls who have walked this difficult path — many abandoned, isolated, and afraid — and who found not just support, but dignity and empowerment through Mother’s Heart. Listening to their stories was profoundly humbling.
On our second day in Cambodia, we journeyed to the riverside town of Neak Loeung, near the Vietnamese border, where we spent an unforgettable time with Damnok Toek — learning more about their work with disadvantaged children, including those living with disabilities. We quickly came to see their informal education and day care centres as vibrant spaces of learning, laughter, and support.
What began with shy glances and waves from the Grade 1-3 children, quickly turned into playful laughter as we joined them for a day full of colour, creativity, and connection. We painted the outside wall of a classroom with fun handprints and individual designs, played high-spirited ball games, took part in a litter-pick and even got our hands dirty planting salad greens that will soon be used in the on-site kitchens. We left feeling that every child is seen, supported and given the chance to flourish.
We were also honoured to bring donations with us — baby items and clothing for Mothers Heart, and clothes and games for Damnok Toek. Thank you to each and every person who contributed so generously.
