First Hand 80’s Disco!

Friday 27th May 2011 Friday May 27th 2011? I don’t think so! For those crazy chickens heading to the First Hand ‘Back to the 80s Party’, the year was more like 1981… More than 120 guests, all dressed to impress (80s style), turned up to the Dutch Club with the clear intention of bopping the night away to the very best of 80s pop, rock and disco. Partygoers enjoyed free-flow drinks and a curry buffet and were able to help donate to First Hand either by bidding for some impressive auction items or buying tickets to win some great prizes. But the serious business was going down on the dance-floor. Strutting their stuff, smoke-machine billowing in the background, celebrity spotters could be forgiven for picking out Michael Jackson, Madonna, Axel Rose, Holly Johnson and many more icons of the era. In all, the night was a great success with a fantastic amount raised $16,287.60, which will go to the RiverKids project food programme. With some great photos of the occasion people sure did Relax, enjoy some Red Red Wine and D.I S.C.O.! Disco...

Walk for Rice at East Coast Park

Sunday, September 19, 2010 Wow what an amazing day it was for First Hand on the 19th of September 2010! At least 150 people of all ages took part in our Walk for Rice in East Coast Park. Each participant braved the hot Singapore sun to walk 2km, carrying in their backpacks the equivalent in weight of rice to feed 50 Cambodian children for a month. To replenish us when we finished, we were welcomed by cold drinks and a great Sausage Sizzle (thanks to The Butcher in Holland Village). Much respect and thanks also goes to our super chefs, Elana Sterley and Joe Alfonso for withstanding the searing heat from the BBQ to supply us with delicious hotdogs. This was First Hand’s first family event and what a successful one it was. The Walk for Rice raised a staggering $13,000 so far which helps us towards our $40,000 target for the year. Without all your generous support, in giving both time and money, this would not be possible. Thank you to all of you who came and contributed to our food programme for vulnerable at-risk children in Cambodia, and thanks to those who couldn’t make it but contributed anyway. We hope to see you all again at our next fundraiser, so watch this space! for more photos...

Cocktails for a Cause

Wednesday, May 12, 2010 First Hand were delighted with the Cocktails for a cause evening held last week. It was a fantastic evening – great to catch up with many of our regular supporters but also wonderful to see so many new faces at this event. We were really honoured to have some of the Riverkids team attending the evening, especially Dale Edmonds – founder of the project. She gave a heart breaking account of some of her experiences in the poverty stricken areas of Cambodia’s Phnom Penh and had the whole audience glued to every word! First Hand was delighted to announce the completion of it’s Food program in Neak Leong. And pledged support to Riverkids with the promise of raising $40,000 for a new food program supporting the Riverkids children and their families. for more photos click here Cocktail...

Canadian International School Garage Sale

Saturday, May 8, 2010 First Hand and the CIS PTA held a Garage sale at the CIS Toh Tuck Campus. It was a fantastic opportunity to clear out lots of unwanted items and help First Hand finish their food program which started at the end of last year. There was a great turn out from CIS parents – a total of 47 tables and a few fun activities to entertain the children on a sizzling hot Saturday morning. The morning raised a fabulous $1725! Thank you to everyone involved in organising the sale. Special thanks also goes to CIS’s Grade 2-5 class, who organised their own table with toys and books donated from the class. They raised a fabulous $152.50. Thank you Grade...

Walk for Rice at Tanglin

Thursday, March 25, 2010 The children of Y2-4 at Tanglin Trust school have braved the March tropical rain storms and raised just over $1000 for the First Hand food program, by participating in a walk for Rice held in the Singapore Botantic Gardens on Thursday. The walk for Rice event encouraged the children to work together as a class and carry the equivalent in weight of 2800 bowls of rice. To represent this the children each carried two litre bottles of water in their back pack. This weight equated to the amount of rice needed to feed the 50 children in the Neak Leong centre for one month. The children raised money by asking for sponsorship for this task and had to walk 1km whilst carrying their backpacks. Although they class found it very tiring, especially during the rain storm, but they did not complain at all. Cathy Clarke, who organized the walk and is mother of Sean who participated with his class said “I am so proud of all the kids for their compassion and real genuine interest in what they are doing and why they are doing it”. Class Y2 -4 has now raised an amazing total of just over $1900 so far this year. Before Christmas they collected bags of recycling and worked diligently in creating awareness of how hard many children in Cambodia have to forage daily in the dump area for recyclable items to sell just to scrape a living. Through this programme $920 was raised. A big thank you from First Hand to all the children who participated in the Walk for Rice...
